With the development of science and energy system reforming, the application of clean energy will be more and more extensive. In recent years, there is outbreak of severe haze weather in most areas of China, air pollution seriously affects people’s health. The core of the energy field of the prevention and control measures is to control the total amount of coal consumption, increase usage of natural gas, and vigorously develop nuclear power and renewable energy as alternative energy. Nuclear power compared with hydropower, wind power and solar power, in the aspects of improving the quality of the environment, has obvious advantages. Nuclear power unit capacity, stable operation, production process with basically zero emissions to the environment, can improve the environment of the very significant role. According to the national nuclear power development plan for the long term, the next few years, China will safely and vigorously develop nuclear technology, nuclear power system technology to form the ability of independent research and development. In 2007, China has introduced the passive cooling system of the third generation of advanced pressurized water reactor nuclear power technology, which ensures the safety of nuclear power plant by the characteristics of natural force, and sets the prevention and mitigation of serious accidents as the nuclear power plant design basic requirements, therefor it has the better safety. From the nuclear power development of the current situation, the third generation nuclear power technology has become the mainstream of the international nuclear power development.At present, based on making full use of existing technology and resources, the nuclear power technician actively digest and absorb the third generation nuclear power technology, to speed up the independent process. An important part of the passive cooling system core makeup tank as the third generation of advanced pressurized water reactor nuclear power technology in the validation study, in-depth analysis of the design process, is of great significance to provide security for the nuclear power plant operation. The design process of the water replenishing tank in the reactor core, the main difficulty is the need for design requirements and transient load and interface requirements, fully considered and various conditions calculate and assess strictly according to the design specification. By structure comparison, this paper chooses the simple manufacturing process to forge integral cylinder and cylinder head as structure design plan. Due to the embedded scheme commonly used in pressure vessel design over the welding deformation and welding crack problems, on the head the whole forging nozzle has been realized the connection pipe welding form butt welding for pressure vessel design. Because of the short and thick structure for core makeup tank, the column supporting structure has been selected. This paper considered the difficulties in design, then carried on the research by conventional design method.Due to complicated structure shape of the core makeup tank, the analytic method can’t be used in calculation. Using the ANSYS software, this paper calculates stress of the important parts by finite element analysis, such as cylinder, inlet/outlet pipe, a manhole seat and supporting column. Based on the ASME design specification, using the finite element analysis results, the stress intensity of the main parts can be correct according to the stress limit of the various working conditions, and the stress intensity can be solved by linearization techniques. The analysis results verify the rationality and the scientific core makeup tank design, and the results have been obtained the industry experts’review. This paper has done the further application of the design method of the modern advanced design core makeup tank, and the basic work about domestic design of core makeup tank, providing reference and help to the following researchers.
