Steam turbines and generators are the most important equipments in thermal power plants, so that the accurate and proper design of the steam turbine generator foundation is the key issue for the general electric plant design. Due to the high requirement of skills for designing the steam turbine generator foundation, generally engineers can hardly access the process of designing. Even in the first class and large electric power design institutes, there are very few specialists in the steam turbine generator foundation. On the other hand, many design engineers in the medium or small electric power design institutes have some inappropriate understanding of the steam turbine generator foundation. For example, they tend to put too much weight on the past design experience, prefer over conservative designs, or have limited theoretical knowledge and software skills.Therefore, most design engineers are eager to have a comprehensive and applicable book that can offer a road map on this area, covering the theoretical and software knowledge, relevant policy, and the details of the design process. Unfortunately, there is no such book so far and the engineers cannot complete the design without the guidance from specialists.This article briefly reviews the development of the steam turbine generator foundation, and its calculation principle and calculation requirements. This article focuses on the design methods and design procedures of the steam turbine generator foundation, and offers practical design examples. At last, the different design computing programs are compared based on the effective and optimized design for the steam turbine generator foundation. This article is meaningful to the general design engineers who are not familiar with the steam turbine generator foundationThe steam turbine generator foundation tends to adopt the frame type foundation that covers static and dynamic calculations, construction and reinforcement, etc. The main contents of the static calculation includes eccentric foundation and foundation bearing capacity calculation, strength calculation, the simplified calculation of dynamic load, the earthquake action, the components of the internal force calculation, etc.The difficult part of designing is the dynamic load calculation. The main rules of current design works are based on the Dynamic Machine Foundation Design Code (gb50040-96). The widely used computing programs are TGFP, ANSYS, SAP2000, Staad, etc. The different programs have their advantages and disadvantages. The calculation results based on different programs can be slightly different. After comparing them, this article shows that nowadays the simplified calculation method according to the rules is rarely used. Multi-degrees of freedom should be considered. The TGFP can produce straightforward results and it is easy to apply. Other programs are more suitable for analysis. If it is possible to use different computing programs, we should compare the results based on different programs rather than only rely on one program. We should pay more attention to the optimization design under the control of various indicators. Different designers can produce different drawings. In the drawing process, steel bar configurations, structure requirements, the optimization of drawing depth, etc should be noticed.
