Nowadays electric power is widely used. Only complete and reliable electric system can guarantee the stability of power transmission, promote the development of local economy and meet the demands of people’s living. Transmission lines are charged with an important task of delivering electric power to all sides as the main artery of electric system. In recent years, with the rapid development of the grid and the increase of severe convective weather, lightening faults show some new features. Serious faults caused by lightning have increased significantly, such as simultaneous flashovers on double-circuit transmission line on same tower and successive multi-circuit trips at the same transmission channel. Lightening protection of high-voltage, long-distance and high-capacity transmission lines is facing new issues. In order to reduce lightening accidents of transmission lines and improve the stability of electric energy supply, China and other countries all take a variety of integrated lightening protection measures.Minhou County is located in the southwest of Fuzhou, where majority of transmission lines are in mountainous and densely wooded area. Related data show that the risk of shielding failure in suburbs is three times higher than in plains, or equivalent shielding angle increases 8°.Therefore, taking effective lightening protection measures for transmission lines has become a pressing matter in order to ensure safe operation of transmission lines and reliable power supply. The research based on statistical analysis, combining theory with practice, seeking to draw the characteristics and laws of lightning strikes on transmission lines in Minhou County, proposes new methods and suggestions in design, construction and management, ultimately achieving the goal of full range protection of transmission lines by using multiple lightning protection technologies.
