With the continuous improvement of speed and load of the railway vehicle, the installation and requirements of the parts on the railway vehicle bogie are also getting higher and higher. Many bogies came out the problem of the failure of bolts in the running process. So bolt connection is a key factor for whether the bogie can operate safely. In this situation, it is necessary to analyze and study the strength of the bolt joint on the locomotive vehicle bogie.Taking the representative shock absorbers and axial end plate fastening bolt group connection on the railway vehicle bogie as an object, the structure of the bolts group was analyzed and studied by using the theory of indeterminate and thin plate bending. According to the damping characteristics of the shock absorber and the EN13749-2011 standard, the static strength and fatigue strength load condition of the connecting bolt were determined.This paper introduced the VDI 2230 VDI 2230 part 1 and the checking process of the bolt strength which the VDI 2230 part 1 presented in detail, and compared the calculation methods for the design of the bolt connection where the mechanical design materials and the VDI 2230 part 1 introduced. For the two kinds of the bolt group connection structures which this paper selected, according to the VDI 2230 part 1, the structure of the bolt group was simplified reasonably and a single bolt connection model was established. The resilience of the bolts and clamped parts, load factor, et al. were calculated, the static strength and fatigue strength of the bolts were checked.Taking Excel workbook as the operational object of database, VBA as the programming tools, Excel VBA project as the software development platform, the bolt strength checking system and the bolt connection parameter inquiring system were created based on VDI 2230 part 1, and then created the corresponding interactive interface. Users only need to select and input the required data in the corresponding interface, then can get the checked result of the bolt strength quickly.The finite element model of the shock absorbers and axial end plate fastening bolts group connection structure were created based on the finite element method. The joint bolt was analyzed by the software of ANSYS and FE-SAFE. According to the results of the analysis, the stress distribution law of the thread was obtained and then the checked results of the static strength and fatigue strength of the joint bolt were also obtained.By comparing the results of the two methods for checking the strength of the bolts, it illustrated that the rationality of the VDI 2230 part 1 which was used to check the strength of the connecting bolt on the railway vehicle bogie. The related theory and the method of bolt strength check that this paper introduced has certain guiding significance to the design of the connecting bolt and the structure of bolt connection on the railway vehicle bogie.
