As a part of the urban space, the river island is not only an important component of the city waterfront landscape, but also one of the few habitats of the river ecosystem. The anabranched river pattern is widely distributed in the downstream plain of Yangtze River. With the continuous urbanization process in China, many rivers once located in the edge of the city changed as the center part of the city. As a result, urban waterfront has also become a dynamic region, and the demand for development and utilization of the river island is growing rapidly. However, in order to utilize and develop the river island in the long run and rationally, we have to deeply understand the value of river island.Firstly, the paper concluded the features, functions and types of the river island, analyzed common problems existed in the current development of the river island and noted the reasonableness and necessity of utilizing the river island as green space. On this basis, through the deeply analysis of the actual cases and the related research achievements, this paper proposed the development principles from the perspective of green space and the utilization patterns under different conditions. At the same time, the landscape elements related to the river island were analyzed in this paper. In the end, the principles and policies previously proposed were applied to the utilization design of the river island area in the Xiangjiang River in Changsha section.
