The energy used in construction presently amounts to46.7%of the social energyconsumption in China, exceeding that of industry and transportation. Considering thelargest number of residences’ storage and construction, the energy used in residentialbuildings accounts for45.9%of that of construction. Furthermore, the situation ofresidences in cold region is not optimistic. The incorporation of environmental andenergy consideration into residential design has become a main stream of thesustainable development in China.Since1970s, the western countries have paid much of their attention to thenational statistical surveys in building industry. In the1990s, researchers in thosecountries diverted themselves into the field of total energy use during the life cycle ofa building and gained remarkable achivements, including Databases, ResearchMethodological System, Assessment System and Evaluation Tools. In the meantime,researches on LCA-based building energy consumption in our country startedrelatively late, and developed slowly. The results of the study have been staying onqualitative or half quantitative level all the time, much less focus on residentialbuildings in cold region.From the point of Life Cycle Assessment theory, the paper studied six2011newresidential buildings in Tianjin and classified them with their different characteristics.This paper presents a method on how to calculate the energy use during the life cycleof a building from three levels, namely: Plane Layout, Architecture Form andArchitecture Detail Design. Moreover, this research intended to demonstrate theEnergy Saving Strategies of Residential Buildings in Cold Region and Key Points inDesigning of the Point-type High-rise Residential Buildings in Tianjin City.LCA-based building energy saving is the most effective way to reduce the energyconsumption and effect on environment of buildings. The purpose of the study is tochange the thinking modes and normal designing procedures of the designers and tooffer certain design principles and reference suggestions for the building energysaving in Tianjin city.
