Study On The Construction Of Traditional Commercial Space In The Protection And Utilization Of Hancheng

With the progress of urbanization, people start to extend their views from themetropolis to more distinctive areas, in this phrase, the development of Chinesehistorical and cultural city has been drawn more and more attentions. Therefore, thispaper aims to study one of the representative historic city, Hancheng. As the humansettlement with unique residential buildings and deep cultural connotations, thecharacteristics of Hancheng can be mainly manifested in the multitudinous historicalbuildings, blocks and the overall environmental features, which contributesubstantially to the cultural connotation of this city from both materialism and idealismaspects through vivid human scene of life.In order to resolve the dominating questions, such as how do we protect and makefull use of the historical resources, and what can be done for bringing the old city, likeHancheng, back into sight, and the approaches to combine the characteristic culturalresources with the further development of the city, the traditional commercial spacebecomes a key at that time when the protection and utilization of the ancient city cometo light.A prosperous commercial environment constantly stimulates the city, and acts asthe essential driving force. Furthermore, the traditional commercial space, whichsignifies its social public property, serving as the fundamental element to the spacestructure and features of city. In China, the space not only inherits its basic function asa site for commercial activities, but emphasizes more on providing a platform forpublic life and communication as well. Thus, the core business district can be seen as a postcard for the ancient city, for instance, the South Street of Pingyao, Jinnan Street inZhaoyu. For this reason, the traditional commercial space is able to reflect almostevery aspects of the old city. In advocating the protection and utilization of the ancientcity, the value of the traditional commercial space appears more prominent.Consequently, the priority should be put in the optimizing construction of that spacewithout any doubt.This paper sets the protection and utilization of Hancheng as the background byproceeding from the relationship between preservation and urban development, andanalyzing the value and significance of commercial space in the city, and thecharacteristics of the involving elements in spatial organization through the originand evolution of the ancient city; then concluding the specific approaches andstrategies of the different cases backgrounding the traditional commercial space byanalyzing the current domestic historical and cultural heritage and deducing thesimilarities and characteristics of those cases; at last, analyzing the current situationand existing problems of Hancheng through this project, and concluding the accessibleways of traditional commercial space and different constructional approaches bycombining the theory with practice. As a result, a deeper perception of the fully use ofhistoric and culture resources of ancient city by constructing commercial space will beachieved.
