With excellent insulation properties, good electrical properties andsimple production process, XLPE cable is playing an increasingly role inthe city’s power gird construction. Therefore, XLPE cable insulationcondition is directly related to the region’s economic development andpeople’s daily lives. Routine preventive tests can not reflect the realsituation of the cable insulation. Meanwhile, it will spend a lot ofmanpower, material and are more likely to accelerate cable aging. Thispaper has developed an on-line monitoring system which applies to themedium voltage XLPE cable on partial discharge to analysis insulationabnormal condition, judge discharge styles and prevent breakdown intime. This paper analyzes the causes and the basic characteristics of partialdischarge phenomenon, provides a detailed description of the process ofpartial discharge, sums up the forms of partial discharge and brieflydescribes the development of partial discharge detection technology inour nation and abroad. This paper introduces the hardware and software architecture of theon-line monitoring system. The entire system is composed of the sensor,pre-filter amplifier module, multi-channel data acquisition module, thelocal server and remote system in five parts, which transfers theprocessed signals to a remote monitoring center for expert diagnosis. It ishelpful to handle the real-time cable operating conditions and preventpotential risks of insulation deterioration. Finally, the paper describes the monitoring system on-siteinstallation. Currently, the system has been running well and qualifyingthe substation testing requirements.
