Model is one of the important instruments of the design process. As theinstrument which is closest to condition the design accomplished, model has beenpopular since it appeared. Today, the digital technology has made the design processchanged a lot. However, physical model still is a centerpiece for designers. Thisarticle tried to explore the characteristic of the model, the relationship between modeland real building and how the model impales the design process, aiming to find outthe reason why model is so important, and the principles and methods of the design.The author started from the definition, function and classification of the model,clarifying the main field of the research. Indicating the model is also a process, itemphasized its superiority comprised with other design methods. Then it discussedthe main characteristics of the model which are the same as the building, such asabstraction, simplification, scale and so on. With two detailed examples in practice, itproved the model is the mechanism of the design and this process is dynamic,enhancing the article’s applicability in reality.
