Historical and cultural heritages are great wealth of a city,that create citycharacteristics, enhance the sense of belonging. They are also a kind of non-renewablescarce resources. As the increasing development of city in our country, massive urbanrenewal makes historical districts suffered serious impact. How to effectively protect theancient city, coordinate the relationship between urban development and culturalinheritance become into a pressing problem.This paper researches the preservation and revival of Taiyuan ancient city. Bystudying the concept and classification of cultural landscapes, we analysis the mostimportant elements of the historical urban area, try to find the way to effectively protectand spatial inherit the history and culture, carry forward and develop the excellentheritage spirit of city. Based on arrangement of the historical and cultural resources andanalysis of the present urban problems of Taiyuan ancient city, we put forward urbandesign strategies for the attempt in protection and revitalizing historic urban area,coordination between the old and the new elements, to make healthy development of thecity.With the rapidly changing of modern city, the development of the city allows theintervention of new elements. The protection of the historic district is not rigid andstatic, to promote its vitality is more important. Through introducing the theory of"urban catalyst",this paper explore how the new elements stimulate new energy underthe background of city development in Taiyuan, and make the historical districtbecomes a valuable “treasure” not only in culture, but also in social and economicaspects.
