In order to meet the requirement of the high speed indexing motion in theautomatic machines, a cam linkage combined indexing mechanism is presented. Thenovel indexing mechanism can produce many indexing cycles when the input shaftturns a round. It is in a composition form of a five bar mechanism enclosed by a pairof conjugate cams, and because of that, the mechanism has a compact structure. Allcontribute to the wide application prospect of this mechanism. The following workshave been completed:On the aspect of the indexing mechanism’s innovation design, a generalquadrilateral indexing mechanism is taken as the established mechanism on the basisof Yanhongsen innovative design method. The characteristic of the topology isanalyzed. The generalized kinematic chain is built. After specialization, many typesof new structure which have the same composition form are obtained. These studiescan provide a reference to the innovation design of this type of indexing mechanism.On the side of the dimensional synthesis of the indexing mechanism, theconstraint equations of the geometry and the transmission of power are derived on thebasis of the structure and transmission principle described systematically. The effectof dimensional parameters on the transmission performance is analyzed. The generalapproach of the indexing mechanism’s kinematics design is presented with therequirement of a better transmission performance. Then the virtual prototypes of themechanism are developed which verifies the validity of the novel mechanism.The method of the multibody systems kinematic analysis is used and theconstraint equations are derived, then the indexing mechanism’s kinematic analysismodel is established, the motion law of each component in one indexing cycle isobtained. The kinematic analysis method used is suitable for the similar mechanism.The two mode model is used in order to build a dynamic model with clearance.The change law of the force between the cam and the roller is obtained. The variation of the contact force, when selecting various motion laws, is also achieved. It canprovide a basis to the choosing of the motion law. The functionary line incrementmeans is used in order to obtain the corresponding relation of the clearance and theangular error of the output shaft.
