With the rapid development of economy and the comprehensively advance of urbanization process, the prominence of the issues such as the shortage of urban construction land, compressed living space, and road traffic congestion have seriously affected the quality of people’s lives and constrained the city’s sustainable development. Efficient and rational development and utilization of underground space has become a necessary way to solve the above problems. Scientific evaluation of the development potential, difficulty, value and comprehensive quality is important basic work for the realization of reasonable underground space planning. The evaluation of underground space resource of urban planning area in Suzhou was carried out based on the technology of GIS, which aimed at the geological conditions, urban construction and the development situation of social economy in Suzhou’s urban planning area. This has the important practical significance for the planning management and investment in construction of urban underground space in Suzhou.This paper established evaluation objectives and contents of underground space resource from the aspects of properties of underground space resource and development requirements. It was proposed that the evaluation of underground space resource should be carried out from three aspects of geological conditions(topography, geotechnical engineering conditions, hydrology, geological hazards, etc.), urban environment constraints (mainly the ground construction, the protection requirements of ecology and cultural relics), socio-economic conditions(With location, traffic, land price, population given priority). And the function mechanism of each influencing factor was described in detail, which provided the basis for the establishment of index system of the evaluation model about underground space resource in Suzhou.With the method of AHP, the paper established the hierarchical structure of influencing factors of underground space resource, and then the evaluation index system and weights were determined combined with expert investigation method.The evaluation model of difficulty, potential value and comprehensive quality of underground space resource were established based on the method of multi-objective linear weighting function. Then the development potential evaluation model of underground space resource was established based on the method of eliminating the impact factors item by item.Combined with GIS technology, division unit for underground resource evaluation was established according to road network and the border of geological factors and various types of impact data were digitalized and standardized. The evaluation model of underground space resource was established with the tool of GIS Model Builder, and the computation and classification standardized data were done with the function of GIS spatial calculation. Thereby the actual evaluation of urban planning area in Suzhou was carried out to determine the development degree of each level of underground space in Suzhou city center, the difficulty of underground space development in Suzhou urban planning area, the potential value of underground space development and the distribution system of comprehensive quality in Suzhou city center.The evaluation results of Suzhou urban planning area were used to calculate and count the amount of underground space resource what was available for reasonable development based on the land types in Suzhou city center, and to undertake classification statistics on the development difficulty, potential value and comprehensive quality of underground space resource in each district or county of Suzhou. The amount of underground space resource, which could be effectively developed at the depth shallower than30m, was counted and calculated based on the comprehensive quality evaluation results of shallow layer and sub-shallow layer in Suzhou city center. By this way, specific recommendations can be provided for the rational development of underground space resource in Suzhou.
