Three-dimensional modeling and visualization of banded terrain along railway isan important research direction in3D integrated line-selection design,3Dvisualization and information management. To build3D terrain models, with linesroadbed, bridges, tunnels, culverts and other structures, it will form a3D sceneenvironment, which is the virtual landscape along the railway line. It can provide aconvenient, intuitive visualization platform to design railway line-selection, selectprogramming aspect ratio and run railway operator.The paper studies the railway terrain modeling and visualization, it include thefollowings:(1)Collect the data of railway topographic, and research several storage formatsof DTM, and process the data for terrain modeling, this will lay the foundation forterrain modeling.(2)Discuss two DEM modeling methods which are the regular grid and triangularirregular network, analyze three methods to build TIN network, use triangulationgrowth method to struck the network, this will form3D terrain models.(3)Take OpenGL graphics toolkit as the visualization tool, and utilize VC++language, this will study the terrain visualization model.(4)Develop the experimental systems by using Window XP as platform andVC++with OpenGL as programming language, and take certain terrain data ofChengdu-Kunming railway for example. The experimental system was applied todisplay a three-dimensional terrain railroad. The effectiveness of networkconfiguration and the visualization methods was verified. It will provide reference forrailway engineering visualization scene.3D model of ribbon terrain along the railway and structures is the foundation ofdigital railway. It has very important significant to build a scientific and reasonablethree-dimensional model of railway will provide precise visualization tools to reviewand assess the program, design the various stages, and budget the project.
