In the river course renovation projects in cities in the water-deficient area in the past, due to the consideration on values of flood control, irrigation, transportation, and other functions, the river revetment were often applied with artificial renovation method of surface hardening, such as pouring concrete, stone masonry and so on. Although this form of revetment could, to a certain extent, guarantee the safety of flood protection along the river banks and increase shipping capacity, it greatly reduces the landscape and ecological values of the river and decreases the daily life quality of the residents. Therefore, the design of river revetment is really a difficulty in landscape design in water-deficient cities. With the promotion of the concept of ecological revetment, we are more aware that the degree of emphasis on ecology will directly affect the sustainable development of the urban landscape ecology in cities in the water-deficient areas.Loess Plateau is located in north central China, where the climate is arid with severe water shortage and soil erosion, resulting in its unique natural landscape and urban landscape. On the basis of the explorations and practices of some early landscape projects in river revetment construction on Loess Plateau, the present paper, based on the landscape site conditions of the cities in water-sufficient area and the summary of the experiences of completed revetment landscapes, through the comprehensive analyses and researches on outstanding cases of the renovation of revetment forms both at home and abroad, is going to summarize five principles of revetment design with the support of revetment design elements and major design theories, and conduct adaptability research on the design method of revetment forms in water-deficient areas taking Shanxi Xiaoyi Old Town Relics Park Revetment as an example.This paper consists of five parts:Chapter Ⅰ discusses and clarifies the present research’s background, purpose, significance, method, content and so on; Chapter Ⅱ conducts systematic analysis of the waterfront landscape site conditions of cities in the water-deficient area and their current revetment status; Chapter Ⅲ describes the common types of revetments, analyzes the major resource elements that constitute revetment landscapes, explains the advantages of ecological revetment and conducts studies with revetment function, humanization, rainwater and flood control, biodiversity, ecological design of plant landscape and other elements as control points; Chapter Ⅳ analyzes outstanding cases of the renovation of revetment forms and summarizes five principles of revetment design, and conducts adaptability research on the design method of revetment forms in water-deficient areas taking Shanxi Xiaoyi Old Town Relics Park Revetment as an example; Chapter Ⅴ draws conclusions on ecological revetment construction practices and sustainable development in water-deficient areas and proposes specific recommendations.
