With the reduction of nonrenewable energy resources like coal,oil and natural gasand the increasing environmental pollution, More attention has been paid to the windenergy as it is a renewable energy source. Wind power has been developed rapidly.Large-scale wind power bases are built in China. Because the wind energy is influencedby the natural environment, wind power has the characteristics such as randomicity,intermittent and volatility. It will have a great impact on power system If large-scalewind power access to power grids directly.And it will affect the stable operation ofpower system.To solve this problem, the energy storage system is the most effective method.Thepumped storage power station is widely used because of the large capacity of storage andtechnology maturity. By the transformation of the energy, wind power combines withpumped storage station together.The wind power becomes manageable.This method isconducive to wind power connected to power grid and reduce the waste of resources.Based on the basic theory of wind power and pumped storage power station, amodel for the optimal operation of wind-hydro system was proposed which set themaximization of economic and environmental profits as objective function. Byintroducing weighting factor method, the different methods of joint operation are studiedwhen focus on the different benefits.Two kinds of operation modes are discussed whichare single farm and wind&hydro integrated power system. The optimal model is solvedby Multi-Agent Genetic Algorithm. Simulation results indicate that the coordinatedoperation of wind farm and pumped-storage plant not only reduces the impact of randomwind power output on power system operation but also improves the ability of windpower been used by grid.Coordinated operation also can smooth the output of thermalpower and achieve significant economic and environmental benefits. Under differentweighting factor, both wind power utilization and comprehensive benefits are higherwhen combied wind power and pumped storage.Finally, the paper studies the relationship between the ratio of wind and pumpedstorage capacity. The model of ratio of capacity is established considering economicbenefits and the power of volatility.The optimal capacity of an area ratio relationship isget by simulating.The effects of different unit installed capacity investing cost to optimal capacity are studied in the last.The capacity of pumped storage station should beconsidered from economy, safety and stability to evaluate.The study shows that pumped storage has obvious effect on large-scale windpower.Research of combined operation provides an important theoretical basis foreconomic operation and energy saving scheduling of wind power. Research of the ratioof capacity provides a certain reference for the plan of wind farms and pumped storagestation. The optimal operation of wind-hydro system has important economic and socialbenefits.Also it can improve the healthy development of wind power.
