Communication system is a very impormant part in lifeline system. If the information can be transferred out of a disaster area after an earthquake depends on the seismic performance of the communication system in this area.Communication system plays a very important role in earthquake relief. Therefore, it is necessary to investigate seismic vulnerability of communication system of an area and to predict its possible disaster consequence before earthquake. Seismic disaster of communication system can be mitigated by the seismic vulnerability research in this study. Also, the effciency of disaster relief can be increased. This study has carried out the research on the earthquake damage predication and seismic vulnerability analysis of communication facilities and communication towers in the communication system.Main contents of this study are included as follows:First, the seismic vulnerability analysis methods for communication structure, communication tower and communication facilities were summarized. The advantages and disadvantages for each method were also summarized.Second, seismic damage was predicted for the communication facilities in the campanies of China Mobile, China Unicom and China Telecommunication in Yangjiang and Huizhou city in Guangdong province. The used analysis methods were introduced in detail. Calculation process was described. After these analyses, the seismic failure matrix and seismic damage prediction results of these communication facilities were given. Then economic loss assessment for communication systems in these two cities after earthquake can be carried out based on such results in this study.Last, seismic vulnerability of typical communication tower was addressed and the vulnerability curves were given. The finite element model of a representative tower structure was established by using the ABAQUS softeware. Modal analysis and Pushover analysis were performed. The first six modal shapes and pushover curves of the typical tower were obtained. Based on this, the tower structure damage indexes of different damage states were build. By using the Latin hypercube sampling technique, randomness of ultimate tensile strengh and extensibility of steel, as well as randomness of earthquake input were all considered. Statistical analysis was performed on the seismic responses of the typical tower and its probability distribution was obtained. Then the vulnerability curves in different damage states of the communication tower were given. These curves can be used in economic loss evaluation of such type of communication tower.
