Product design has to meet demands of the broad masses of consumers, andconsumers will employ more aesthetic perceptual words to describe theirdemands. Transparency is one of the frequently used words. Classification ofproduct design materials has gradually gained the general trend of distinguishingby sentimental demands of the users. This study is made by selecting transparentmaterials under such a trend.This paper tries to find a method and means that can help designers selectmaterials by studying aesthetic performance of typical transparent materials andconstructing database in product design.Analysis and integration is conducted for materials with transparentproperty in product design materials according to CES EduPack and Manual ofEngineering Materials. Typical transparent materials selected in this paperinclude PS, PET, PETG, PMMA, PEN, PC, PCTG, PCTA, COC, PMP, PA, TPU,silica glass, laminated glass, lead glass, titanium silicate glass, diamond andsapphire. Technical attributes of studying typical transparent materials coverdensity, young’s modulus, yield strength, tensile strength, compressive strength,elongation, hardness, fatigue strength, fracture toughness, maximum servicetemperature, minimum service temperature, thermal conductivity and thermalexpansion coefficient.Aesthetic characteristics of typical transparent materials in product designinvolve tactile characteristic, visual characteristic, hearing characteristic,olfactory characteristic, and taste characteristic. Technical characteristics relatedto aesthetic characteristics are studied, and the relation between aestheticcharacteristics and technical characteristics of transparent materials is sought, so as to provide the basis for selecting aesthetic characteristics of typical transparentmaterials.Aesthetic performance database and technical characteristic database oftypical transparent materials are constructed through multi-dimensionalvisualization technology. Besides, a material library of typical transparentmaterials is established. A material manual suitable for designers is formulatedby collecting information about materials manufacturers. The database andmaterial library are verified via product design examples. It proves that databaseand material library of typical transparent materials can help designers find outtransparent materials that meet the design requirements more conveniently andaccurately. Meanwhile, a foundation can be provided for design, production andpractice. |
