Garden landscape is an important ecological infrastructure of maintaining urban eco-system circulation.But it costs a lot of water to maintain its own life and renew life. Water conservation landscape design must be considered when the dry region is under the ecological construction.Water-saving methods such as drought-enduring plant selection,reasonable allocation of green landscape,efficiency utilization of water resources,water-saving irrigation are essential.The study proposes the methods such as the utilization of rainwater, drought-enduring plant selection and water-saving features design to achieve the water-saving goal.The results can provide landscape designers with the basis of reference in the residential area design,and propose feasible ways to accomplish water conservation landscape design.Taiyuan is the capital city of Shanxi.The analysis of Taiyuan’s current water quantity,amount of water available,desirable water consumption and water resources problems we faced,and the investigation of plant design in residential area,utilization of rainwater and water features design folly indicate that the necessity of building water-saving landscape in Taiyuan residential area.With the urbanization process,hydrological cycle appears to be a "short circuit". A contrastive analysis of natural and urban hydrological cycle,based on the theory of opening up the source and regulating the flow,proposed multiple pathways to achieve water-saving landscape in residential area.From rainwater utilization aspect,based on the model of "bioretehtion",the concept of filter strips,planting cell depression,rainwater gardens and bioretention basin are been proposed.Rainwater utilization measures,following the rules of natural rainwater collection,are been linked to form "rainwater chain". Theoretically.rainwater utilization measures are used in residential area successfully.Plant selection and its arrangement are essential to plant design.Based on Drought tolerance and shade tolerance,plant dual rating system comes into being. Soil moisture in residential area and hours of sunshine in severe cold are used to determine plant dual rating system on a certain site. From the water features design aspect,size of water features,low-water landscape and ecological water features are the methods to save water resource.
