Since the1980s, the society has set off a wave of roof rectification; all of thecities have successively actively launched the corresponding policies to improve theoverall city appearance and environment and to standardize the construction safety ofbuilding. The rapid development of the construction of urban buildings does not onlystimulate the economic growth, but also raise new requirements. People’s attentiongradually changes from the building facade to the upper space of building, that is,reexamination of roof and from the dependence relationship of a single building inpublic building complex to its influence on the whole city appearance andenvironment, lifestyle and urban culture. The construction of urban public buildingmeets people’s living needs and improves the urban construction; however, due to theblind following suit, it is gradually separated from the historical link and becomes themetaphysical “vanity projects”, lacking of integrated thinking about the essence ofbuilding and historical and cultural continuity.Considering the cultural significance lacked by the building roof and byanswering the dogma problems in construction, this paper analyzes the cause of suchproblems and current features from the perspective of cultural symbolic significanceof building roof. First, the cultural symbolic significance of building roof iselaborated, the current difficulties and the importance of roof are analyzed from thespatial dimension, the cultural symbol of roof is studied from the historicalperspective, and the problems exposed by the building roof in development arepointed out. Second, considering the various expression forms of roof design, asystematic analysis model is built by combining the essential features of eachbuilding, and the opinions on how to enrich the existence significance of building andimprove the spatial quality of urban building and on the innovation and inheritance ofurban building and spiritual culture are proposed. It is expected to find the errorcognitive model caused by rapid urban development and make up the significantmeaning brought by the upper space of building that has been forgotten to people’slife.
