Among the modes of urban public transportation, subway has become one of themain forms of transportation due to its fast speed, efficiency and environmentalprotection. Thus, construction of subways is of great importance to alleviate urbantraffic pressure. With the development of society, unban public transportationprovides not only the function of daily travel but also other functions of commonattributes including communication, commerce and official business and its roleshave become more and more various. At the same time, along with the increasingstandard of life, people’s life style, aesthetic values and spiritual demand are allchanging. The public have higher request to the public space environment while inturn, the demand at this respect leads the promotion of space function as well as newstandard and goals of the development of the environment in subway station. However, compared with the development of subway in developed countries, Chinarelatively lags behind in this field, being at the primary stage of the design and studyon space environment of subway with many unreasonable elements in the designs.Based on the background mentioned before and the concept of human nature, through discussing the features and elements of underground space of subway stationand characteristics of people’s psychology and behavior when they are in there, thispaper further analyzes the public’s cognitive process and the effects of spaceenvironment to them, then gets the induction of designs about underground space ofsubway station and verifies the research result through illustrations. This paper is divided into five parts. The first part (Chapter one) raises the problems of the subject. This partdiscusses the background, aims, significance, methods and framework of the research, illustrates the general situations of underground spaces of subway stations at homeand abroad at this period and then reveals the existing problems of the designs of thissubject in China. The second part (Chapter two) gives research category and theory basis.According to the first part and the concept of human nature mentioned in this part, thepaper lays out theory basis from environmental psychology andenvironmental-behavior studies as well as analysis and definitions of relatedconcepts. The third part (Chapter three) analyzes the problem concerning about the subject. On the basis of the features of underground space in subway station, this part arguespeople’s cognitive process in the space environment of subway station. Anddepending on the environmental-behavior studies, the paper also gives comprehensiveanalysis of the main participants’ behavior characteristics, psychological feelings andsensory responses. The fourth part (Chapter four and five) take resolutions of the problem. This partcomes to a conclusion of main elements of space design and starting with thoseelements, according with different functions of spaces, strategies of space design areproposed. In the end, this part gives an example of Zhengzhou Metro Line1to verifythe research results. The fifth part (Chapter six) represents the conclusion of whole paper. This partgives a summary about the underground space of subway station and expresses theauthor’s expectation of the space design of the subject.
