Lightning is one of the killers of power system security. For overhead transmission line length is long, wide distribution, large area, so are vulnerable to lightning strike, causing damage to insulation performance of the transmission line and lightning flashover, then stream power frequency arc along the flashover channel. If the arc in the relay protection operation time has not been put out, it could cause tripping. Traditional measures of lightning protection has a lot of defects, the effect is not ideal. So the use of "channel" type lightning protection concept and the theory of explosion shock wave of extinguishing arc.This paper is the study of explosion shock wave produced by explosion arcing gap lightning protection with mutual coupling, arc extinguishing features. First on the morphology and properties of arc (potential gradient, arc pressure, diameter, density, etc.), movement and other factors were analyzed, and a better understanding of the formation and development of arc process, find out the factors that influence the maximum development of arc MHD model is set up. Second is the study of the production of explosion shock wave, the spread of the pressure, the change of energy in the process, reaction model of explosive, the explosion shock wave propagation model is established. The arc and explosion shock wave of mutual coupling model is set up. AUTODYN simulation software is used to establish the interaction between shock wave and arc coupling model of the arc of the space of semi-closed hit after the morphology, exercise, stress, and the damage degree of simulation analysis.By comparing the simulation results lateral blowing and longitudinal blowing through the comparative analysis the effect of the two ways of arcing. Through laboratory small current lateral blowing arcing test and institute of xi’an high voltage electric arc blow-out longitudinal test to verify the correctness of the explosion shock wave extinguishing arc theoretical, but also test the effectiveness of the blast arc extinguishing device. Images taken by using ordinary camera, high speed camera and wave record waveforms recorded by can clearly show the process of arc extinguishing. Analyzing explosion arcing gap lightning protection in the actual circuit operation, have installed lightning trip-out rate, accident rate, but also to further test the correctness of the theory of explosion shock wave arcing, and extinguished arc in a short time to beat strong advantage.
