With the rapid development of China’s mountainous highway, the proportion of the entire road tunnel project accounting is growing. To ensure traffic safety, tunnel lighting and power supply is indispensable. However, operation and administration of tunnel lighting is expensive. The cost of tunnel lighting has become heavy burden through the survey from Guangdong, Fujian, Zhejiang and Chongqing management department. Under the premise of safe driving, improvement of the operational effiency and reduction of energy consumption become an urgent problem to be solved. There are many types of tunnel lighting and different types have different charateristics, including luminous efficiency, brightness, and response of human eye under different lights. Luminance and visual reaction time affect the process of traffic safety and efficiency of light-emitting has direact impact on energy consumption. Not only more comfortable and safe driving environment for drivers will be provided, but also cost of operation and energy consumption will be reduced through the study of highway tunnel lighting characteristics. Applicability of five types tunnel lighting including HPS, MH, LED, CFL, LVD was analyzed by comparing experiment in this paper. Result showed that the driver’s reaction time depended on background brightness, background spectrum, object contrast, object accentric angle and light types. It was been verified that reaction time would be shortest while LED was adopted and light-emitting efficiency, luminance and luminance uniformity of LED lights are better than any other light source.Eventually LED was comfired to be the greatest in energy-saving by testing in long, extra long, medium and short tunnels.
