Not only is the traditional strengthening method uneconomic, but also it will do damage to building. However, energy dissipation reinforcement can effectively reduce damage degree of structure after the earthquake and improve the comfort of the structure. Damped cable system consists of pre-stressed steel cables, viscous dampers and steel deviators, which is an innovative device about energy dissipation and has a clear transmission path and specific mechanism energy dissipation. Combined with a practical project, this paper studied the design of the system used in structural seismic strengthening and its damping effect.The main research work and conclusions were summarized as follows:1. Composition and working principle of the damped cable system were introduced and the way to establish the model in the software was detailed.2. In order to display the contribution to stiffness, the infilled wall was simulated by equivalent bracing in calculation model. The research showed that:the infilled wall positioned symmetrically was conducive to improve the seismic performance of frame structure and increase the lateral stiffness of the structure and reduce the storey drift.3. The layout method of the shape of damped cable was studied. In order to ensure the same level of resistance of each floor,"constant horizontal forces "method the shape of damped cable was determined using the method of "constant horizontal forces".4. The results of time history analysis under frequent earthquake showed that:the damping effect of damped cable system on inter-storey displacement angle, absolute acceleration of each floor and base shear were not obvious. This was due to the small displacement in which the damping effect of damped cable system would not be obvious under the effect of frequent earthquake.5. The results of nonlinear time history analysis under rare earthquake showed that: damped cable system can effectively reduce the elasto-plastic inter-story displacement angle of structure; the distribution and the extent of plastic hinge were decreased obviously, which would lessen the damage degree of the structure effectively.
