Distribution network, which is one of the key energy carriers facing all kinds of clients, lies in the end of the electricity supply chain. The construction and development of smart distribution grid is foundation of the smart grid. As the foundation of smart grid, data communication system is the important part of the research of smart distribution grid, which can improve the reliability of power supply, narrow the scope of power off and reduce incident handling time. In this paper, we give the description of the concept, function, main technology and the meaning for smart grid. We also discuss the system structure, data communication capabilities and features, as well as the requirements and protocol for distribution automation system. At the present, there are four technologies used to communicate, such as power line carrier, passive optical networks, WIMAX and TD-LTE. We propose choice principle and model of smart distribution data communication by giving a comparison of them in the aspects of operating principle, technical characteristics and networking mode. Considering the actual local condition, the project take use of multi-level distributed architecture and complex data communication measure, by which can achieve data transmission requirements in regional intelligent distribution automation system. From building ideas, program design, program implementation to construction achievement, we finally introduce the intelligent distribution communication network’s construction of Yuhang district in Hangzhou. We also give some experience and practice proposed in the construction process of distribution automation communication network in Yuhang district. The smart distribution automation programs and typical examples proposed in this paper will have a certain reference value for the current implementation of urban and rural power grids.
