In recent years, with the acceleration of urbanization, more and more high-rise buildings areemerging. Meanwhile, the problems such as cleaning, installation, maintenance of the externalwalls of the buildings are highlighted. These problems provide a larger space for the blossom ofBuilding Maintenance Unit (BMU). Because of being a non-standard equipment, heavy workloadand complicated calculation are needed in the design of BMU. The traditional design methodswith low efficiency and accuracy can not satisfy the need in developing a modernhigh-performance BMU. Therefore, a computer-aided design and optimization system for thetelescopic boom of BMU are developed.For a definite operating range, a method to determine the numbers and length dimension ofthe telescopic boom is put forward. The method can bring up a more reasonable designingscheme because the material utilization, manufacturing costs, and the weight of telescopic boomare considered synthetically. According to some relevant design standards of BMU, the loads onthe telescopic are analyzed in different work conditions. The stresses on dangerous sections arecalculated. On the bases of meeting strength and work range, setting the lowest weight of thetelescopic and highest utilization of material as goal, a multiple target optimization design modelfor sectional dimension of the telescopic boom is established. An optimized result is provided fora specific example. The optimized telescopic boom is re-design by removing material to reducethe weight as standard steel are used. The advantages of the programming languages Visual Basicand Matlab are adopted, and hybrid programming technique are used to develop acomputer-aided design and optimization software. The software can be used to determine thelength dimension, optimize the section and automatically finish the drawing of the scheme of thetelescopic boom.The design and calculation methods of telescopic boom are studied, and the correspondingcomputer-aided design software is developed. These work can improve the design efficiency andquality, relieve the design workloads of the telescopic of BMU effectively.
