With the development of economy and continuous construction of highway network, thelong-distance passenger transportation in our country has achieved rapid growth. Meanwhile,traffic accidents related to long-distance buses occur frequently, which threatens people’s lifeand property safety seriously. Bus speeding, overloading and driver fatigue driving are themain factors which cause all these accidents.In view of these security risks existing in long-distance passenger transportation, aremote monitoring system based on GPRS for long-distance buses is designed in thisdissertation. The system can achieve the remote monitoring through sending information ofspeed, position, image and alarm collected from the long-distance bus to the monitoringcenter. At the same time, the monitoring center can send some information such as remindinginformation, warning information to the bus.First, the research signification of remote monitoring system for long-distance buses, aswell as the research situation of vehicle monitoring system, is introduced and some keytechnologies associated with the system are investigated in this dissertation. These keytechniques mainly include technology of satellite positioning, wireless communication,Google Maps, image compression, and so on. Then the general design of remote monitoringsystem and the main hardware modules which compose the system are introduced. Thegeneral design of the system includes two parts: structural design of the system and choice ofthe network methods. And then, programs of the remote monitoring system are designedbased on Visual Basic6.0exploitation platform, which can monitor speed, position, insidedynamics of vehicles and drivers’ status. Moreover, the main hardware modules test and theintegration test of the system are carried out. Test results show that the remote monitoringsystem designed in this dissertation can achieve all functions expected. Last, the results ofthis dissertation are summarized and the further research is pointed out.Long-distance bus remote monitoring system designed in this dissertation can not onlybe used to monitor the bus speeding, overloading and drivers’ fatigue driving behavior in realtime, but also help track and rescue the long-distance bus when it is in the event of an emergency. Consequently, such a system developed in this dissertation will help to improvesafety of long-distance passenger transportation.
