The offshore petroleum has become one of the most important energyresources on which we can rely in the future. However, due to the extremelyhigh risk in offshore engineering, SIS and other proper protection mechanismshould be adopted. IEC61508and IEC61511, the international function safetystandards, have a clear definition and requirement on how to design and toevaluate SIS in its safety life cycle. But the research and application of SISwas started shortly in China. Thus, some misunderstanding and mistakes stillexist in the SIS application and analysis due to the insufficient experience.Through the research on the related standards and the reliability theory, theevaluation criteria and function requirements of the SIS were specified. Themeasures to enhance the safety integrity were examined by differentiating andanalyzing the hardware safety integrity and system safety integrity. The targetand demand of realization phase in the safety life cycle was analyzed, theninduced the core concept of the realization method to achieve function safety.By study on the reliability analysis theory for safety related system, the failurepatterns of SIS were classified and the calculation method of safety integritywas specified. Base on an ESD for a certain Central Platform, combined withthe related application experience abroad, also with the requirement by safetyrelated standards, the ESD and its SIFs were comprehensive analyzed andrealized. Finally, validate the system by safety integrity calculation and testmethod.The verify result of the system proved that the Central Platform ESD hasachieved the requirements of SIL of the SIFs.
