Baiyun mountain resortis known as “urban lung” of Guangzhou, which is always the bestplace for citizens spending their leisure time. In order to enrich tourists’ activities, BaiyunMountain Authority set up ten obligatory teaching sites in2008, where tourists could learnrecreational activities such as ballroom dance, native fitness dance, shadow boxing, chorusand so on. These obligatory teaching sites not only increase the recreation fuction of BaiyunMountain, but also generate a high sound pressure level. Hence, studying the effects ofactivity sound on acoustic environment will contribute to the management and planning ofpublic activities, and guarantee the impressive scenery of Baiyun Mountain. This paper presents a series of field investigation aiming at four obligatory teaching sites, namely New Attractions Platform, Initial Clouds Exploration Platform, Slideway SingingPlatform and Educated Youth Building Platform. Physical measurement, listening record andquestionare are used as methodology. Consequently, this research has focused on currentsituation and problem analysis of acoustic environment and subjective evaluation of soundcomponents. Here are three results listed below:Firstly, physical investigation shows that when obligatory teaching activities are inprogress, average sound pressure level of the four sites reaches69.2dBA, which is only59.8dBA in contrast (no teaching activities). Obviously, teaching activities have led to highersound pressure level, but most of touristsare satisfied with the quality of acoustic environmentof obligatory teaching sites, indicating that current quality standard of environmental noise isnot suitable for acoustic environment management of Baiyun Mountain resort.Secondly, questionare survey shows that being atisfied with the quality of acousticenvironment of obligatory teaching sites is mostly because they are fond of teaching activitiesand believe it would bring lots of positive effects to the resort.Thirdly, coustic environment of obligatory teaching sites consists of natural sound, tourists activity sound and machinery noise. The problem is that machinery noise and part oftourists activity sounds have relatively low preference, but sometimes get a relative highprominencein some obligarory teaching sites. Hence, although tourists like teaching activities, part of them concede loudspeaker music soundis still a little noisy excessively. It is necessaryto do some deep research for the management and planning of activity sound in this sight. Finally, comprehensive analysis shows that exisiting activity sound from obligatoryteaching sites doesn’t have too much negative impacts on surroundings yet. Considering thatsome obligatory teaching sites are close to main historical soundscape spot, while criterionabout preservation of historical soundscape resources is still not established so far. There isstill a need for further study on relevant issues. This reseatch ravels out the acoustic environment of four typical obligatory teaching sitesand the impacts on surrounding scenic area of activity sound from these sites fundamentally. It is significative for us tofurther promote soundcape resource conservation and fully improvesound environment quality of Baiyun mountain resort.
