With the constant progress of society, automobile industry would lead to the urbantraffic congestion problem prominently. Traffic congestion will directly lead toincrease of exhaust gas emission, decrease of air quality and growth in traveler’s traveltime and so on, which could bring a drop in residents’ quality of life. The way how toalleviate urban traffic congestion effectively, and improve urban traffic road networktraffic utility, have become urgently problem to be solved.Intelligent transportation system (ITS) provides a new method to solve the urbanroad congestion, improve traffic conditions and enhance the utility of road network, while advanced traffic management system (ATMS) is one of the core part of ITS, andurban signal intersection control system is the key part to the ATMS. In this thesis, thestudy object is traffic signal control system in the city road network, which focuses onthe research to the signal timing method of traffic signal control system. The maincontent is as follows:In the first chapter, the research background, objectives and meaning of trafficsignal control system was introduced, Research status at home and abroad of the signaltiming method were discussed, and existing problems of research was pointed out. Inaddition, the main research work of the thesis was introduced. In the second chapter, the theory of traffic signal control system was introduced. The signal timing parameters of signal control system, evaluation indexed and basicmethod of signal timing was exposition mainly. In the third chapter, in order to improve the operational efficiency of the wholetraffic network, according to the signal cycle length, green signal ratio and the featureof vehicle delay, a nonlinear programming model based on dynamic signal timing wasset up. According to the vehicle flow feature of the road network, the signal cyclelength and the green signal ratio of each phase were adjusted dynamically by signalcontrol system, the right of passages for each import lane was allocated reasonably. The results indicate that traffic assignment based on dynamic signal timing method isconsistent with the fixed signal timing method results. Compared with the fixed signaltiming method, the dynamic signal timing method makes the utility of the decussate intersection increase about10percent, and the utility of the T-intersection increaseabout30percent. The dynamic signal timing method would well be adapted to thechanges in different traffic states. The utility of non-motor vehicles in the intersectionwould be effectively increased by using dynamic signal timing method, when thevolume of non-motor vehicles is small; while it has a little fluctuation, when there is alarge volume of non-motor vehicles in the intersection. In the fourth chapter, in order to improve the coordinated control operationalefficiency of two adjacent intersections, according to the signal cycle length, greensignal ratio, phase offset and the feature of coordinated control vehicle delay, thequantity of dissipation, dual target dynamic optimization model based on signal timingparameters of two adjacent signal intersection control system was set up. By votinganalytic hierarchy process, the dual target dynamic optimization model was solved. The example shows that: the dynamic signal timing method makes the utility of thecoordinate control lane promote visibility, when the length of road between twoadjacent intersections is200meters,350meters,550meters, the utility of thecoordinate control lane will increase by14.47percent,11.01percent,7.91percent.While the length of road between two adjacent intersections is short, it is necessary tocontrol the two adjacent intersections coordinately. At the same time, compare with thefixed signal control, dynamic signal control capacity increases by2.85percent.In the fifth chapter, the main work and thesis innovation points were summarized, and some shortcomings of the thesis were pointed out, furthermore, the direction tofurther efforts in the future were provided.
