The rapid development of modern city offers a opportunity for construction andplanning of urban square. As a important part the urban square development, the“lighting”program requires elaborately illuminating engineering plan and design toensure the urban square giving full play to its function and aesthetic. But at currentage, over-illumination issues in some cities render the urban square at night lackingdefined features and short of concerns at a mental level. As the contemporary designtrend has been transferred from functional needs to spiritual needs, the illuminationdesign of the urban square have to maintain based on human experience and feelings.The innovative part of this paper is to introducing emotional design theory to theurban square illumination design.Designing a illumination system combinedfunction,anesthetic and the ability to spread city motif and culture based on theperspective of human psychology needs. Primarily, the paper put forward a concept ofemotional illumination. Secondly, on the basis the research of square illuminationstructure and mental requirement of people in different zone, this paper strength theimportance of emotional illumination after we meet the needs of function. Andthen,the author presents a emotional design theory of three“standard”level inpsychology to analysis the impacts of color and emotion requirement on theemotional illumination.
