At present, in various regions of China, the masonry structure as the most commonform of the structure is widely used in urban and rural construction. The damage data ofpast earthquake shows that because of masonry structure’s own characteristics: lowstrength, poor integrity, poor seismic performance etc, resulting in serious damageoccurred in the earthquake. About masonry structures failure patterns in the earthquakehas attracted high attention of the researchers and engineers, many researchers haveresearched on the theory and experiment of related issues. At the same time, manyresearchers have begun to bring seismic design ideas and specific methods of countriesthat have experienced and advanced seismic design such as USA, Japan, Europe andother countries into Chinese code to comparative analysis. But only a few researchershave done the research about the comparative analysis of masonry structure seismicdesign in china and abroad, we need do deeper research about the comparative analysisof masonry structure seismic design.The article based on the comparison of the seismic design ideas and methods inChina and USA, basis for seismic fortification level7and seismic fortification level9,the model structures were designed respectively and corresponding to the codes ofChina and USA. After studying the related parameters settings in ABAQUS whenestablish finite element models of masonry structures. The designed structures areanalyzed under various earthquake records of the two-way seismic ground motion andintensity to compare their nonlinear dynamic responses through ABAQUS, andinspecting the similarities and differences of masonry structures failure patterns controlmethod between china and USA from structural crack, crack distribution, damageenergy dissipation etc.Based on the above-mentioned work, the main conclusions of this article can bedrawn as follow:①In structural design, strength design theory of American code is close toChinese design theory, but it’s lower than the safety reserve of allowable stress designtheory. The steel ratio of China is higher than USA. American code imposes muchstringent requirements on the confinement of beam and column, resulting in a higher stirrupratio than Chinese code.②According to the results of the structure dynamic response, the lateral deformation of the masonry structures designed by Chinese and American code ismainly in shear shape. Withing the decrease of the cross-wall spacing, the lateraldeformation of the masonry structures turns to be curved shape gradually. The storydisplacement and story drift have little difference between Chinese code and Americancode under earthquake; and the overall damage energy dissipation of the structure isrelatively close too.③The effect of improving the overall performance of the structure by settingreinforced concrete ring beam and columns in Chinese code is better than the effect ofimproving the overall performance of the structure by setting reinforced masonry beamand columns inAmerican code.
