Firstly, the basic analysis has been done for the research background in thispaper. In recent years, there are various kinds of serious waste of resources andassets in the massive construction of natatorium, which leads to the low utilizationrate of natatorium space, inadequate opening time and less economic benefits.Although some of them changed their operating model into self-sustaining one, thiskind of transformation has brought a lot of disadvantages.In order to adapt to themulti-functional design, many natatoriums overlook the original function ofcompetition, the racing natatorium can not play a role accordingly.Thus, the author puts forward the concept of variable design for the natatoriumand demonstrates the rationality and necessity of this concept. Variable design is anew exploration for the requirements of different needs, its goal is to change thenatatorium into a self-regulation system by flexible transformation of space andadjustable changes of facilities.Secondly, the author analyzes the needs of variable design from the aspects ofeconomic operation in and after the racing diversified development of architecturalfunction, the elasticity of their space, and the efficient use of equipment andfacilities. Then, the author provides three variable elements of support, transform astheoretical basis. Finally, the author analyzes the principles of variable design:function compounding, space expanding, economy intensification, environment andelements collaborating.Thirdly, the author divides the variable design into space variable design andfacilities variable design based on the analysis of function, space, facilities andenvironment. Space variable design is taken to change the features of space bycoordinating each element of the natatorium. Facilities variable design refers to theflexibility of facilities design in order to supply more fun for the natatorium andprovides the powerful technical support for variable design. The mutual promotionand common development of these two elements will be the strong driving force inthe construction of natatorium.The variable design the construction of natatorium has been realized today withthe high development of science and technology. And with its excellent flexibility,adaptability and controllability of the future, this concept will be effectivelyintegrated into the design and bring new vitality for the development of the city.Such design can adapt to different environments, different conditions and functions,thus it may solve the problems effectively in and after racing save and reuse theresources so as to achieve the benign development of sports, ecology and society.
