With the rapid development of industrialization and usage of various electricalequipments, power quality problems are more prominent than ever before. Inorder to prolong the life of electrical equipments, as well as to improve energyefficiency, it is therefore critical to improve the power quality of power supplysystems. One of the very important steps in improving power quality is to obtainaccurate measurements of the power quality. In this paper, firstly, onsite studyand research on power system of a mineral processing plant was performed anddiscussed. Specifically, real time monitoring of the power supply circuit, electrical equipments, busway circuit and compensation equipment insidefloating-grinding workshop,10K ton workshop and medium&fine crushingworkshops was conducted. Fluke1760power quality analyzer, voltage sensor, flexible current sensor, PC device, and PQ(Power Quality) analyzing softwarewere used in combination to measure and analyze PQ of individual electricalequipment and circuit. Secondly, Report was given against each individualequipment and circuit by referencing the national power quality standards. Forequipments and circuits, voltage fluctuation and harmonic current problemswere identified.Lastly, simulation using MATLAB simulation software was conducted againsttypical equipments and circuits with power quality problems. Simulationconfirmed that when variable-frequency drive or soft starter was used whenstarting large motors, the impact to overall grid voltage could be lowered. It alsoconfirmed that, the amount of damages by harmonic currents to electricalequipments could be reduced by filtering out harmonic waves using acombination of active filters and passive filters.
