Urban rail transit system(URTS) is abundant throughout many cities and metropolitan of the world, and many more circle lines are under construction or proposed to build. So far,40circular lines, sharedcircle lines or pan-shaped loops are currently operational in30cities. Beijing, London and Tokyo have tworings each. Madrid and Singapore have three each, Charleroi city has four.Contrast to the construction of loops’ current situation, only some of the studies have finished, whichare mostly based on the perspective of qualitative analysis and experience, and there are little quantifiedand deep-going research on circle lines of urban rail transit system. Therefore, there are no technicalcriterions to referenced, which generate blindness and randomness in loop planning.Forecasting and analyzing to characteristics of passenger flow are the precondition to determine thescale of urban rail transit station, vehicles-choice, parking configuration, depot location and so on. Looplines have high ratio of transfer station due to its geometrical morphology, which greatly increase amountof optional route in URTS; thus the mechanism of passenger flow structure is much different from otherstype lines. Understanding deeper at the passenger routing in loop lines of urban rail transit system will helpto enhance rationality of loop lines planning.Basic data of40currently operational circle lines were collected in the world, which be sorted intoseven categories according to the morphological characteristics. On this basis, pros and cons of setting upcircle, construction condition of loop lines, the function of ring lines have been related and analyzedqualitatively. For making accurate judgment to function of circle lines, it is significant to explore the route ofpassengers carried by loop lines. Therefore, a topological model is built to judge the route of passengerflow in URTS. Then, the factors of influencing passengers’ route-choice are classified into three types:basic factors of passengers’ route-choice, differentiation factors of passengers’ route-choice and topologicalparameters. By statistics, calculation and particularly analyzing, each parameters of topological model andpassengers’ route-choice are calibrated to fixed value. After that, the origin and destination points (ODpoints) are sorted into six sets according to position relative to loop line. We get the regular pattern ofpassenger routing in loop lines finally through calculating the optimal routing with the changing of circleradius and included angle of urban rail transit ray line.
