With the continuous expanding of China’s expressway network, the expressways in moreand more cities have been intertwined. There are several expressways connecting one place toanother. And the related authority in charge of expressways has carried out the study toimprove the current unclear recognition of vehicle’s travel path, for the unclear pathrecognition may cause the uncertainty of tolls and other problems. Because vehicle tolls onexpressways are calculated by travel distances, if expressways are netted or circular, there willbe several different paths between toll stations and thus it will come to different tolls for avehicle. Therefore, how to determine the travel path is a significant problem to improve theaccuracy of the current expressway tolls. This paper first analyzes the influence of travel paths on tolls and studies the principlesof the methods to recognize travel path, merits and demerits of these methods, and the actualfactors obstructing the recognition of travel path. Then, it focuses on studying the VLPR(Vehicle License Plate Recognition)-based precise method of recognizing travel paths onexpressways, analyzes the key principle and technology in this method, and applies VLPRsystem to the recognition of vehicle’ travel path. At last, based on VLPR system, it presentsthe optimal solution as to the recognition of travel path. Furthermore, it carefully studies thesystem’s structure and network communication, and, taking the whole into account, designsthe database and related software. By combining the results of this study with the project ofexpressway toll collection system going on in Shannxi, we form an interactive partnershipwith the actual project, which has achieved a good social effect.
