With the continuous development of our country’s transportation, the probability ofreinforced concrete bridge pier subjected to vehicle impact load is also growing. By the use ofmodel experiment and finite element numerical calculation technology, in this paper themodel experiment and numerical research of the reinforced concrete piers under low-speedhorizontal collision were carried on based on the horizontal collision theory and finite elementmethod.(1) An overview of the present theory, experimental and numerical research about piersimpact were given in this paper. The sums up of current domestic and foreign researchachievements of piers under horizontal impact were taken and the further research problemswere put forward.(2) The time history curve of displacement, rebar strain and concrete strain are gottenthrough the model experiment of circular cross section reinforced concrete piers underhorizontal impact in two conditions. This paper also gives an analysis of the overalldeformation of piers and reveals the oscillation effect in the process of impact.(2) A finite element calculation with two differents kinds of commonly used concreteconstitutive model has been taken. Compared the calculated results with experimental results,it shows that the concrete constitutive models are applicable. The analysis shows that thecorrected elastoplastic damage cap concrete model should be chosen when you take anumerical calculation of piers in a horizontal impact.(4) The main energy dissipation mechanism of the reinforced concrete piers werefounded by the finite element method. A damage assessment criterion were proposed basedon a vertical remaining bearing capacity, which has good practicability and maneuverability.(5) The studies show that the cross section bending strength of piers will be greatlyinfluenced by dynamic action in lateral impact. Based on the results of the parameter analysis,an practical section dynamic bending strength calculation formula of the reinforced concretepier were put forward by using the method of regression fitting. It proved that the simplifypractical formula has good precision by comparing the results with the finite element results.
