Due to the characteristic of short time development、lower design costs and highly innovation,adaptive design become more and more importance for enterprises as an important type of mechanicalproduct innovative design. Extenics is a kind of method which using a formal model to research thepossibility of things and mainly use to solve contradictory problems. So extenics provide a formally、modeling with qualitative and quantitative combined methods to research adaptive design. In thispaper,extenics theories and methods were introduced to research the primitive modeling problem ofany kinds of adaptive design information、the method of extension adaptive design and theoptimization problem of the scheme of adaptive design, and those research were validated withexamples.Firstly, aiming at the deficiency in knowledge representation of any kinds of design information inmechanical products adaptive design, so the modeling problem of adaptive design information werestudied by introducing elementary theory of extenics. Secondly, due to the current limitation ofmechanical product adaptive design in case retrieval and modification, the technology of case reuseand adaptation were studied. Depending on the different importance of different design features, animproved weighted similarity calculation method that based on extension distance were presented,which can brought existing products information into new products design. For product design shouldnot only meet the functional requirements but also to meet the structural requirements, so the solvingmethods of incompatibility and opposition problems in extenics were introduced, the objectivefunction of extenics adaptive design were proposed for characterizing the compatibility of conditionsand objectives in the process of adaptive design, and a kind of extention adaptive design model wereestablished based on case reuse. Thirdly, due to the uncertain interval and the incomplete attributeinformation in the procedure of complex mechanism scheme design, a computing method for themulti-attribute extension decision making of grey associated were proposed. Finally, an adaptivedesign and program preferred system of mechanical products was developed based on the abovetheoretical research.
