With the rapid growth of economic, the demand for steel of coastal cities isincreasing. At the same time, the pace of structural adjustment and industrial upgradeof iron and steel industry need to accelerate for eliminating the laggard productioncapacity. When the state encourages actively the construction of large coastal iron andsteel base, influence factors of which should be considered in the design of docklayout and how to make good use of the valuable deep water coastline resource in thedesign of dock plane layout need to be in-depth researched and studied.In this paper firstly some recommendable design concepts has been summarizedon the basis of the dock layout of major steel projects be built or under construction athome and abroad. Secondly the status and natural conditions of Zhanjiang port hasbeen described, and construction scale of the dock has been confirmed on the basisaccording to analyzing the major cargo volume and vessel type of Zhanjiang iron andsteel base. And then combined with time order in the selection designing of the docklayout and experiences of dock layout of large iron and steel projects at home andabroad, the principles be followed have been expatiated by stages in the course ofdock layout selection and two layout projects have been selected after deeplycomparison and demonstration. At last the recommend project of dock layout ofZhanjiang iron and steel base has been confirmed, after detailed comparison ofutilization degree of bankline resources, sustainability of long-term development,feasibility of starting construction, natural conditions, convenience of berthingoperation of ships, comparison of material flow and energy consumption, convenienceof terminal management and so on.
