Research On Urban Public Space Of China Based On Knowledge City

Urban public space has a great significance in urban development and people’s lives. For cities, urban public space is the most recognizable part in the urban physical environment. It is the embodiment of the urban image of the urban fabric, is the performance of urban civilization and cultural characteristics, and is an important "window" for people to know a city. Urban public space can make the city environment more beautiful, can enhance the urban vitality and reflect the city’s character. For common citizens, urban public space provides a place where they can go in and act freely, and become a platform for people to enjoy the city life, appreciate the charm of city and experience different styles. For the society, urban public space can satisfy people’s diverse demands, can promote exchanges and contacts among different groups, and can promote the production of identity and belonging. Urban public space gives citizens the freedom to express and discuss their opinions, which will enhance the democratic awareness and promote the urban democratic processes.Knowledge City, as a new concept of urban development, provides a new thinking for people to know and understand the urban public space. In view of Knowledge City, this paper aims to discuss the problems of urban public space of our country and try to offer some advice for these issues. First, this paper reviews the research on knowledge cities and urban public space, introduces the concept, characteristics and significance of knowledge cities and urban public space, and summarizes the urban public space construction characteristics under the paradigm of Knowledge City. Second, this paper analyzes some problems of urban public space of our country, such as inadequate supply, the lack of features, poor practicality, the phenomenon of isolated island and bad publicity. Third, based on the actual condition of our country, this paper proposes some measures and suggestions to solve the problems of urban public spaces from three perspectives. As for the city governors, they should change their concepts to have a correct and comprehensive understanding of urban public space; should make a reasonable and overall systematic planning of urban public space; should perfect the decision-making mechanism and establish a special construction agency of urban public space. As for the urban designers, the role definition, correct design concept and right design principles are important. And for the real users of urban public space-citizens, they should actively take part in the construction of urban public space, improve their consciousness of the public space and create the vitality of urban public space.
