| Cotton/nylon blends have been commonly used since they combine the advantages of cotton and nylon fabrics. The flame retardant finish of a blend fabric containing cotton and a thermoplastic synthetic is different because of the “scaffolding effect†of the blend. As one of the most popular cotton/nylon blends, the 88/12 cotton/nylon blends are widely used to produce protective clothing for military as well as civilian uses. Those flame retardant fabrics are commercially prepared by “Proban†process and show high levels of flame retardant performance. But they require special equipments because of the “ammonia fume†process and do harm to the operators and the enviroment. Therefore, it’s application and popularization are restricted. N-P flame retardants contain N and P, without halogen, and P has a outstanding “synergistic effectâ€with N. As a consequence, N-P flame retardants show excellent flame retardant performance and give a small amount of smoke during burning, it is an eco-friendly retardant with high speed development and widespread applications.Multi-functional composite finishing technology is defined that two or more than two functions are endued to a fabric so as to improve the fabric’s grade and added value. Compared with the single functional textiles, muti-functional fabrics can meet the requirements of the versatility of textile products. Flame retardant & water repellent fabrics have both flame retardant and water repellent properties, which can better meet the needs of some special fields. With the pad-dry-cure process, a research on the 88/12 cotton/nylon blends of permanent flame retardant finish and flame retardant and water repellent finish were investigated. In this study, a flame retardant system containing 4 kinds of N-P flame retardants is applied to 88/12 cotton/nylon blend fabrics. The effects of the amount of flame retardants, softening agent, resin catalyst and curing condition on flame retardant property are investigated. The optimized process is defined as follows: the concentration of FR-1 is 300g/L, FR-2 is 180g/L, FR-3 is100g/L, FR-4 is 100g/L, softening agent T618 is 20g/L, resin catalys C-3 is 5g/L, non-ionic penetrating agent DM-1230 is 5g/L. The fabric samples were passed through a padder with two dips and two nips to keep an appproximately 70% of wet pick up. Then they were dried at 100 ℃for 3min and cured at 160 ℃ for 3min. Under the optimized condition, the treated fabric has no after-flame and after-glow, the char length of the treated fabric is 9.2 cm. And it shows excellent laundering durability which can pass the vertical flammability test even after 50 home laundering cycles. Thermogravimetric analysis indicates that the starting decomposition temperature and decomposition rate of the treated sample are lower than the untreated sample. The carbon residue increases during combustion after treatment. It is suggested that this system improve the flame retardancy mainly by condensed phase flame retarding and gas phase flame retarding. In part two of the paper, the fabrics were finished by flame retardant and water repellent finish using two steps process. First, the fabrics were prepared by flame retardant finish, then those flame retardant fabrics were finished by fluorinated or non-fluorinated water repellents. The results indicated that both the fluorinated water repellents of Furex-8198(8 C)and DM-3667(8 C)showed excellent water repellency property with when their concentrations were 60g/L and 80g/L.The treated fabrics have excellent laundering durability with a char length of the treated fabric is within 10 cm. The scores of fluorinated water repellents of AG- E092(6 C)and Furex- 616E(6 C)can reach 90+ at the most, respectively in the concentrations of 140 g/L and 120 g/L. The char length reated fabrics were 10.0 cm and 10.0 cm respectively. Under the two steps process, the water repellency property of non-fluorinated water repellents of Furex- NF9 and UCO-DRY-CO were greatly reduced. The scores of non-fluorinated water repellents of Furex- NF9 and UCO-DRY-CO were 70+ and 80-. And the effects on the properties of flame retardant became more and more apparent with the increasement of the amount of water repellents. |
