Character image design is a newly-emerged art design major in vocational institutes in China. The notion of image design covers more widely than just the hairstyle, makeup and costume. It is an inter-discipline involving artistic and technical elements, including costume design, body language, aesthetics, physiology and other disciplines. So the construction of the teaching faculty in this major in vocational institutes is of vital significance. This paper, based on a study of the teaching faculty in character image design in Chongqing vocational institutes, probes into an effective multi-way to ensure the implementation of the education program and the cultivation of the competent professionals.This paper underlines and advocates the faculty’s independence, artistic accomplishment, and economic and social contribution. They should promote the development of this major and its social impact through the cooperation with the institute-owned enterprise.Through well-designed questionnaires and interviews, this paper points out that the faculty in the major of character image design is currently disproportioned with at least fifty percent(even higher) of the major courses delivered by external teachers and that the operating principle for the major development is through the cooperation of the institute-owned enterprise. A further investigation demonstrates the following problems in the current situation of the teaching faculty: the average age is young; the education degree is comparatively low; there is a severe shortage of qualified teachers, not to mention the teachers with advanced professional titles; the teachers’ research abilities are poor; the cultivation of the teaching faculty through cooperation with institute-owned enterprises requires improving; the hire of the external teachers is difficulty as they are not stable and the qualifications are not clearly set; most external teachers lack teaching experiences or adequate major knowledge and undertake multi tasks so that they cannot guarantee enough teaching time for students and focus excessively on practical skills without following textbooks properly.On the basis of interviews and relevant studies, the author displays the major causes. First, according to the national personnel management system, the full-time teaching faculty for character image design major should possess at least undergraduate degrees or even higher. There is, however, currently a marked shortage. Second, there is insufficient investment in the construction and cultivation of the teaching faculty.In this paper, the author puts forward some constructive suggestions. We should refer to the experiences of the developed countries, modeling after their efficient cultivation system, strict management and evaluation system, and flexible employment system. We should set clear aims for the faculty construction, continuously improve their education degrees and their teaching abilities, and promote the personnel management. We should try to construct a teaching staff with both full-timers and part-timers. We should continuously set up the proper strategies for the faculty construction, strengthen the directed cultivation, take good advantage of the cooperation mechanism with the institute-owned enterprises, and perfect the management of the teaching staff from the enterprises. Last but not least, we should set more incentives to stimulate the faculty construction and perfect the personnel management and better the cooperation interface with the institute-owned enterprises, thus forming new directions and references for later development.
