Since the top drive drilling system was invented, it has become the main development direction of drilling machine the world in the 21 century with its outstanding advantage. Top drive drilling system has been widely used in the drilling operation of land, sea and so on. With the rapid development of China’s petroleum industry and deep Wells and complex Wells increasing, the demand for top drive is also increasing.The top drive drilling system is a complex structure of machine, electricity, liquid integration equipment, is high technical equipment in the modern drilling equipment. It has become a modern important equipment of drilling, only few countries in the world with the technology. But the top drive drilling system will have some malfunction in the process of operation, people who will maintain TDS must have higher much knowledge of TDS. Shorten the repair cycle, reduce cost, improve operation efficiency become one of the more important question. Although there have been some of the top drive fault diagnosis expert system, but the basic is mostly about text narrative, it don’t as intuitively and accurate as described in the image, so the development of visual fault system of top drive drilling has the necessity and realistic significance.This paper on the basis of learning and understanding visualization technology, virtual reality technology and the mechanical fault diagnosis technology, aim at the application status of visualization technology in mechanical fault diagnosis technology, the application status and application requirements of virtual reality technology combined with mechanical fault diagnosis technology, carried out basic research work to correlation technique and development program of visual fault diagnosis. Firstly, this paper has analyzed from the user group, functional characteristics, render effects, cost performance etc. aspects of OpenGL, Virtools, Unity3 D, Vega etc.visual development platform and tools, on the basis of the research purpose and development goals of this topic chose Virtools as visual development platform of the system in the end; after that, based on the identified development platform analyzed the relative merits and scope of SolidWorks、3ds Max、Maya、UG NX etc. commonly used three-dimensional modeling software, chose the 3ds Max as system modeling tools, and applied it to building TDS 3D model and scene 3D models; Finally, according to research purpose and the development goal of this topic designed the overall structure of this system, including: instructions, virtual operating, the exit system, the working principle of demonstration module(hole, drill, internal working principle), top drive fault demonstration module(brake disc, blower, faucet, power swivel, rings tilting device), camera switch, to return etc. of system main function and floating menu bar, roaming camera, buttons, special effects, the sky background etc. of system auxiliary function, and realized the system each function module, completed the development of visual fault diagnosis system for top drive drilling system.The experimental results prove that this system has realized visual fault diagnosis of TDS, working principle visual demonstration of TDS, wire rope winding three-dimensional dynamic simulation, virtual operating controlling of TDS 3D model, and has a friendly user interface and handle ability.
