Laser cutting is different from traditional mechanical processing timber. That is widely used in wood processing industry with its high processing speed, high precision, good flexible, high efficiency and environmental protection.According to domestic and foreign research results of laser processing, current situation of timber resources using and development in our country, we put forward a series of wood laser cutting test plan. We also develop and set up the wood laser cutting test bench. The test bench consists of a YAG lasers, a sliding workbench and a frame. Laser cutting system is composed of a condenser chamber, an optical resonator and cooling system. The workbench moves along the X axis and Z axis direction. The movement of the workbench is driven by two stepping motors which drives transmission of rack and pinion. Rack is welded by square steel tube with good stiffness, strength and stability.A series of experiment is to investigate the regularity of wood laser cutting. We wonder how these factors such as laser energy, cutting speed, defocus amount and air-dry wood density, moisture content, structure of wood impact the quality of laser cutting.By observing the microstructure of test-pieces we can know that laser energy and cutting speed have a more significant impact on the surface quality of kerf than defocus amount does. Air-dry density of wood also has large influence on surface quality. The higher the moisture content, the surface quality of kerf increases more. The experiment results show that the laser energy, cutting speed and defocus amount effect on the kerf width are all particularly significant. With the timber air-dry density increased, the kerf width is reduced. However, the kerf width does not change with variety of moisture content. This paper described the mechanism of laser-cutting wood and designed a laser-cutting wood bench. It has also laid the theoretical foundation for the laser-cutting wood by analysing some factors affecting surface quality.
