In recent decades, explosives with high-performance and insensitivity have gradually became the priority of ammunition development in many countries. The ammunitions in modern campaign should have high power, and also have good safety in their using on battlefield and in the process of storage and transportation. NTO is an insensitive explosive that is valued by people recently. Its safety performance is equal with TATB, and detonation velocity is higher than TATB. NTO has prominent safety performance and cheaper cost. So NTO is expected to replace the expensive TATB as a new generation of insensitive explosives.A NTO/HMX based insensitive compact explosive was developed through the design of energy and mechanical sensitivity and study of preparation technology, which provides a new formula of insensitive compact explosive for our country. Firstly, the explosion probability method was taken to test the mechanical sensitivity of NTO and HMX. The impact sensitivity and friction sensitivity of NTO is 28% and 32%, the same sensitivity of HMX is both 100%. Formulas that have higher theory detonation was selected by calculation. The water slurry method at room temperature was used to prepare the molding powder. Binder CF1 was choosed as binder through the study of cladding performance, and was used to reduce the mechanical sensitivity. Then the influence of partical size grading and the ratio of primary explosives and content of binder to insensitivity of product was investigated, in which process the mechanical sensitivity of product was gradually reduced and the impact sensitivity and the friction sensitivity of produst was droped to 14.7% and 16.0% respectively, the detonation velocity was 8432m·s-1. Further with graphite instead of 0.5% binder coated molding powder, the friction sensitivity of produst was eventually droped to 8.7% and 9.3% respectively, the detonation velocity was 8446m·s-1. The composition of formula was determined as NTO(30μm)47%, HMX(60μm)47%, binder CF1 5.5%, Graphite 0.5%.The preparation technology was studied by the single factor experiment and orthogonal experiment. And the best preparation technology was obtained. The proportion of NTO saturated aqueous solution and explosives was 1.6, stirring speed was 400 r·min-1, feed rate was 8 mL·min-1. Accelerating Rate Calorimeter(ARC) was used to study the adiabatic decomposition properties of product. The result showed that the initial decomposition temperature was 172.92℃, adiabatic decomposition activation energy was 295.9 kJ·mol-1, both of the data were high, and the product has good thermal safety.
