With the rapid development of Chinese economy and society, the demand and consumption of refined oil are sharp increasing. Most of which are generally stored in the underground oil tank of gas station. The cleanliness of tanks is the key to guarantee the quality of oil product. Therefore, the underground storage tanks must be cleaned regularly or occasionally. With the promulgation of the new Environmental Protection Law as well as increasing emphases on personal safety, there is an urgent need to implement mechanical cleaning technology to replace the conventional manual methods of tank cleaning. However, current domestic mechanical cleaning technology related to underground storage of gas stations is still in its infancy stage and the localization of mechanical cleaning equipment has not yet been achieved, let alone the rotary jet head which is a core part of the cleaning system. This paper has systematically conducted the research and design of rotary jet head in the mechanical cleaning system for underground storage tank. First of all, reviews for the development and application of the present mechanical cleaning technologies all over the world as well as their shortcomings has been made. Through comprehensive comparative and analysis among the different internal structures and gripping mechanisms of rotary jet head from different companies, the final design solution has been determined. Then, the main parts such as impeller, reducer and nozzles are detailed designed. The four stages NGW planetary gears which have a total ration of 205 are used to output larger torque and reduce speed to ensure the gears run in a steady manner while at a high input speed. A pair of meshed bevel gears is applied to change the direction of transmission. In addition, with the help of the three dimensional software Pro/E, we have achieved part modeling, visual assembly and motion simulation to the rotary jet head and acquired the motion trajectory curve of one nozzle, which is basically in line with the theoretical result. What is more, the density and integrity of trajectory curve are affected by the running time of nozzle, speed of rotator and tooth ration of the meshed bevel gears. Followed by the test of the rotary jet head, which had successfully achived the nozzles’ rotation and revolution movement. Therefore, the orbit of nozzles by simulating was verified accuracy. The spray radius of the nozzles could reach to 5~6m under the pressure of approximately 1.0MPa, which had achieved the same performance as similar foreign products. Finally, we put forward a new efficient and environmentally friendly mechanical cleaning system and method for the underground storage tanks of gas station, and make selection design of main equipments further. It is the first time to make thoroughly systematic study on the rotary jet head which is used to clean underground storage tanks at gas stations. A new type of rotary jet head has been developed and a new mechanical cleaning system was also designed. We are looking forward to speeding up domestic mechanical cleaning technology and related equipments to promote their nationalizations, thereby realizing green and sustainable development at tank cleaning markets.
