Study On The Selection Of Suitability Of Sheep Felt Material And The Discovery Of Perceptual Value

With its gentle appearances and unique physical properties, wool felting not only is one of the oldest forms of fabric in the history, but also can be regarded as a fashionable acclaimed material of artistic handicraft. However, its long history and mature traditional production processes which in turn became a conformist mindset restricting innovative wool felting production approaches. Given this, its product category and application is in a relatively narrow and fixed position, thus it still has a huge prospect.This research starts from material suitability, through explorations of applying needle felting and wet felting combination as well as a lot of handcrafting wool forming experiment to re-examine the suitability of wool; followed by attempting control of wool fibre properties, carried out experiments in felting processing, colour applying and mixing to achieve a sense of painting with a colour fusion. Meanwhile, based on results of emotional impression investigation and the randomised selection survey through the course, I proposed a creative approach using wool felt as “packaging” material, to highlight the unique gentle heart-warming feature as well as precious value added with veneration of the material. Hence,the application of wool felt was expanded from the high-end gift wrapping to a series of exclusive custom gift.This research expect to use applications of wool felt as an example, to provide a process paradigm for a particular material product development. And to explore effective, innovative and wildly acceptable methods on producing nature oriented wool product with Kansei Value.
