The development of high performance flame retardant styrene-ethylene/ butylene-styrene block copolymer (SEBS) material is an important topic in the field of its application.In this paper,the effect of oil, polypropylene (PP) and fillers on the thermal stability, crystallization behavior, processing and mechanical properties of SEBS were systematically studied. With melamine cyanurate (MCA), secondary aluminum phosphate (ALHP) and expandable graphite (EG) as a flame retardant, by cone calorimeter (CONE), oxygen index (LOI), UL-94 test and TGA analysis (TG) studied the flame retardancy, combustion behavior and thermal degradation behavior, A good flame retardant properties of SEBS/PP thermoplastic elastomer was prepared. It has a positive significance for expanding the application areas of SEBS.(1)Oil,PP and fillers modifying SEBS was studied. Results showed that, Paraffin oil modified SEBS system is better than that of naphthenic oil system, and the thermal stability of high viscosity paraffin oil KP6030 modified system is preferably, SEBS/KP6030=2:1, the tensile strength was 10.48MPa, elongation at break was 813%, the mechanical properties was best in the SEBS/PP system; in SEBS/PP system, the crystallization temperature of PP was decreased, degree of crystallinity was essentially the same, The crystallization rate was accelerate. PP improved the processing and mechanical properties of SEBS, the block copolymer of PP modified SEBS,adding 30phr, the tensile strength reached the maximum value of 19.56MPa, the elongation at break of 897%; heavy calcium carbonate to improve the processing performance of SEBS.(2)Currently the study on MCA, ALHP retardant SEBS/PP was less, In this paper, MCA/ALHP flame retardant SEBS/PP improved the LOI and UL-94 level, significantly reduced the heat release rate (HRR) and smoke production rate (SPR), MCA/ALHP= 4:1, while the amount of 40wt%, the average heat release rate (MHRR) was only 90kW · m-2, the average rate of smoke generation (MSPR) was 0.0110m2 · s-1, the flame retardant performance was improved. Meanwhile MCA/ ALHP increased the amount of carbon residue, MCA in the gas phase flame retardant, ALHP was mainly condensed phase flame retardant mechanism, showing a synergistic effect.(3) Study of The MCA/ALHP/EG flame retardant SEBS/PP found that, EG made thermal decomposition temperature of SEBS/PP material in advance, increased the amount of carbon residue; significantly lowered HRR and SPR, while the amount of MCA/ALHP/EG was 40wt%, MHRR was only 72kW · m-2, MSPR was 0.0020m2 · s-1, LOI was 30.8%, UL-94 (1.6mm) reached V-0 level,it effectively improved the flame retardancy of SEBS/PP, EG synergistic MCA/ALHP prepared good performance and low smoke halogen-free flame retardant SEBS/PP thermoplastic elastomer.
