In recent years, water shortage, water pollution and the overloading of water resources become serious. Liaohe drainage area is one of the water-scarce areas with many problems including poor water supply, extremely uneven distribution of water resources and dramatic changes within a year. Ecosystem of Liaohe drainage area was seriously damaged, ecological security issue has attracted people’s attention. Functional zoning of the aquatic ecosystem is a prerequisite and basis for the implementation of regional management of the regional eco-environment and is an important foundation for harmonious sustainable development of coordinating river drainage area.In this research, a drainage area ecological security assessment index system was established from the perspective of ecological security in consideration of population, economy, resources, water environment, pollution source and other factors. Liaohe drainage area was selected as the study area. An ecological safety evaluation model was established with combination of GEM (Group eigenvalue method) and AHP (Analytic Hierarchy Process) to calculate the weight of each evaluation indicator. Then, GMS (grey system modeling theory of software) correlation degree analysis was conducted to determine the main influence factors. Finally, Geographic Information System (GIS) technology was used to research the ecological security regionalization for Liaohe drainage area.The results showed that the ecological security status of water source area in Liaohe drainage area was level IV (unsafe state). Vegetation coverage of Liaohe drainage area had a great impact on the ecological security. Ecological environment problems of the Liaohe drainage area included reduction of resources, low vegetation coverage and insufficient capital investment of pollution control. In consideration of these problems, water conservation ecological security level regionalization for Liaohe drainage area was carried according to the characteristics of water conservation service function, using GIS technology. Then, the protection scheme of water conservation ecological security was proposed to further discuss the proper management measures for water conservation areas at different levels.
