The building fire caused by the organic wall heat preservation material represented by polystyrene resin has become the fire accident category of wide attention. Therefore, it is necessary to study the combustion properties of polystyrene and its flame retardant treatment. And the flame retardant treatment of polystyrene matrix by the addition of flame retardant is an effective way.This paper was prepared three PS flame retardant system by melt blending method, they are PS/Br-Sb/ZB/AOM composite material, PS/IFR/ZB and PS/IFR/ZnO composite material system, PS/PPO/IFR composite material system.By the research on combustion performance and carbon slag microstructure characterization of these materials by LOI, UL 94 vertical combustion method, cone calorimeter, SEM,the conclusions are as follows:(1)DBDPE and Sb2O3 with 3:1 have the most significant flame retardant effect in PS/Br-Sb composite material. The CONE shows the 80%PS/15% Br-Sb /2%ZB/3%AOM composite material can improve the properties like flame retarding performance. Compared to the pure PS, the PHRRs have decreased 68.53%, THRs decreased 60.58%. The FPI and FGI shows material in burns a lower likelihood of flashover, and flame retardant inhibits flame combustion rate, improve the performance of fire safety. But SPR is slightly ascending, ZB and AOM did not achieve the desired smoke suppression effect.(2) Zinc compounds and IFR compound with PS oxygen index can be improved. 70%PS/ 28%IFR/ 2%ZB shows more flame retardant efficiency respectively in their groups. Compared to the pure PS, the PHRRs have decreased 60.70%.The respect such as CO generation rate, SPR, TSP have the best in all the samples.SEM of carbon residue is relatively dense structure.(3) In PS/PPO/IFR composite material system, total quantity of flame retardant was 40%, the IFR and PPO ratio of 3:1 shows more flame retardant efficiency respectively in their groups. In the HRR, pk-HRR(down 50.56%), CO generation rate, SPR and TSP, FPI has the best performance, SEM of carbon residue is relatively dense structure,the highest fire safety performance. Fixed PPO content is 20%, increasing IFR adding amount, HRR, pk-HRR, SPR, TSP parameter data is more ideal, infer that IFR plays a main role in the aspect of flame retardant smoke suppression.
