In this paper, as the skeleton of 1-phenyl-4,4,4-trifluoro-1,3-butanedione(BTA), five novel ligands have been synthesized: MBTF, BTPE, BTDM, BTDB, and TTDT. The reaction of ligands with rare-earth ions gave rise up to the formation of twenty-three novel pluridentate-β-diketone lanthanide complexes. The ligands and their complexes were divided into three species as followed:1. MBTF lanthanide complexes and BTPE lanthanide complexes have been characterized by IR, UV, EA, MS and single-crystal diffraction. It contained one metal and three ligands in the MBTF rare earth complexes to form mononuclear lanthanide complexes, while two metals and three BTPE ligands constituted up of dinuclear triple helical lanthanide complexes. Through the comparison of the luminescence properties and structural analysis, the structural effects on the fluorescence were investigated.2. BTDM lanthanide complexes and BTDB lanthanide complexes have been characterized by IR, UV, EA, MS and single-crystal diffraction. we find out that the structure of the complexes are dinuclear triple helical or quadruple-stranded dinuclear helical.Through the comparison of the luminescence properties and structural analysis, the structural effects on the fluorescence were investigated.3. TTDT lanthanide complexes have been characterized by IR, UV, EA, MS and single-crystal diffraction. Structural analysis indicated that the TTDT lanthanide complexes possessed a tetrehedral geometry, containing four metals and four ligands. As expected, a cavity was found, where potential detection of small molecules could be conducted. And further fluorescent behavior of TTDT lanthanide complexes was studied.
